When I Add a new event, the "Calendar" box about half-way down the screen is always pre-filled with one of my commonly-used calendars. Is there a way to change which calendar automatically pre-fills this section?

Just so that the answer is available to everyone, here is the reply I sent Wade via email:

Hi Wade,
Yes, this is the default calendar as set on your device. To change this:

• Go into the Settings app (not Settings in myCal)
• Tap Calendar
• Tap Default Calendar, and make a new selection
